Members of each sport like to say “Actually, our sport is the toughest, just in a different way than yours is!” As a track and cross country runner in high school, members of the team would mock athletes of other sports who struggled to even run a mile. In a campus setting, each sport basically develops its own clique, with the members of each sport viewing themselves as the superior athletes. Stereotypes within athletics may be an overlooked problem, but it is a serious issue that has hurt and will continue to damage the athletic environment for years to come if not corrected.Įvery sport has its own stereotype, and I could run through how every sport is viewed, but that would be a waste of time. This essay will focus on three forms of stereotypes existent in athletics today- racial, gender, and sport-specific- and their ramifications in society. Many are aware of the characteristic “dumb jock” football player or the “lax bro.” Most don’t realize, however, that creating and perpetuating these stereotypes damages athletics, especially for our younger generation. This essay will focus on one often overlooked form of stereotyping rampant throughout the world-stereotypes within sports.

Various forms of stereotyping exist: racial, sexual, gender, economic, etc. In a simple form, a stereotype is a conventional, oversimplified conception of something. Stereotypes exist in all facets of life: work, school, and sports. I’ve been very busy lately, so hopefully this weekend I’ll have the time to finish my draft.
